Prince Edward Island at a glance
Prince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest province/territory, covering 5,683 sq. km, but has the highest density of population (around 25 people per sq. km) with a population of around 140,000. Charlottetown, the capital, is the largest city and is home to over 33,000 people. Prince Edward Island is known for its 'red' rich soil and a temperate climate that make PEI ideal for farming. Around half of the island is forested and much of the rest is under cultivation.
PEI’s economy is dominated by agriculture and related industries. Potatoes are the most important crop and the most important source of income for the province's farmers. Tourism is the second largest industry and province’s beauties attract over one million visitors every year. As well as agriculture and tourism, fishing is significant to the economy. Food processing is the most important manufacturing activity, although high-technology is becoming important, especially in the medical, electronics and agricultural fields.
Prince Edward Island is known for its moderate climate. Winters are fairly cold, but milder than in much of Canada, while summers are somewhat warm, but rarely uncomfortable. It is also very windy and quite wet throughout the year.
